Alonso and Andrea’s Colorado backyard wedding was such a special day to be a part of! This wedding was so intimate and personal filled with only the closest friends and family. Alonso and Andrea met and fell in love in Costa Rica where Alonso grew up. Their love has triumphed the long distance relationship and now these two love birds are married! It was so awesome watching their friends and families come together on such a special day!
What was the favorite part of your wedding day?
Seeing everyone come together was really warming to me. Many of our guests were coming from other states and even other countries, and it was awesome to see them all show up to support us. It rained and hailed during a piece of our outdoor reception, but the timing couldn’t have been better with everyone already seated under the tent. People were laughing and energetic from how loud the hail was hitting the tent! It was exciting and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves even more. It was the people surrounding us that made the day so great. The catering crew even brought in some food and wine from the patio so that everyone could continue on without having to leave the tent and get wet. We had to be flexible with the weather, and I’m thankful for that. It was a unique piece to the day!
What was your favorite thing to design/plan?
I spent the most time organizing the layout of our tent for the ceremony/reception. I made SO MANY drafts on graph paper of different table and chair formations to visually test out placement options. We were tight on space, so I had to be pretty specific on measurements. I wanted a layout that allowed guests enough space to move around, while also being functional for a ceremony. This might sound like a nightmare, but to me it was like playing Tetris or designing a Sims house, which are both things I enjoy.
Where did you go for your honeymoon? What was the best part?
We didn’t go on our honeymoon yet. Alonso’s (my husband’s) family was in town from Costa Rica for a week after the wedding, so we spent that time with them. We went to Glenwood Springs and showed them a few other places around Colorado. It was a great visit and we will hopefully go on a honeymoon for our first anniversary instead.
If you could give one piece of advice to other brides who are planning their weddings, what would it be and why?
If you are looking for ways to save money, search for decorations or wedding items without using the word “wedding”. It seems to be that almost anything with the word “wedding” attached to it is automatically going to be more expensive. We searched for most of our decorations on discounted craft websites and were able to find many of the same things for a fraction of the cost. One example: we ordered our tablecloths from a wholesale website for about $6.00 – $8.00 each (plus free shipping!). It would have been $12 – $22 each to rent them from a wedding and event rental company.
Anything else you’d like to share with KMitiska Photography readers?
Everyone told me to just have fun and relax and enjoy it, so I tried to keep this in mind as much as possible. It is a great reminder, but I started feeling guilty when I caught myself feeling nervous or anxious or overwhelmed. My advice to you is don’t feel guilty about this! Take in ALL the feelings of the day, even the uncomfortable ones, and take care of yourself as you get through them. Getting married is an important decision and event, and being nervous about something so important seems natural to me. I did have fun and I did enjoy the day and I was able to relax at some point, but this came more easily once I accepted the whole range of feelings going on as normal.
