One of the most enjoyable parts of the lead up to your wedding day is taking your engagement photos as they provide an opportunity to celebrate this incredible next chapter of your love story. Something couples can struggle with though is finding ways to make their engagement photos feel unique to them. I’m here to let you know that thankfully this isn’t as difficult as it might seem. There are so many fun ways to make your engagement session true to you, and by doing so you’ll not only make your photos more personal, but also enjoy having them taken even more! Here are 8 ideas for how to make your engagement photos more personal to you.

1. Revisit Your First Date Spot

Go back to where it all started! One of my favorite ideas for couples to make their engagement photos personal to them is to have part or all of their session at one of their first date spots. Your relationship has a long and storied history, and being able to document where your love is at now in the place where it all began gives your images a truly unique and personal feel to them. Plus you likely have a few photos from those first dates, and comparing them to these will be a ton of fun!

2. Grab a Snack or Drink Together

Another great way to give your engagement photos some more personality is to grab a bite to eat or something to drink during your session. Head to your favorite pizzeria, your go-to ice cream shop, or your favorite brewery for some photos of you both enjoying these things you love. This is such a fun and simple idea to make your engagement photos more personal to you, and you get to enjoy a tasty treat as a bonus!

3. Check Out Your Favorite Shop

Whether you both love collecting vinyl, or you live for the thrill of thrifting, browsing your favorite store together is a great idea to really bring some personality into your photos. This is a great way to start a session if you’re feeling nervous as it allows you to focus on an activity that you love doing together instead of the camera that’s taking pictures of you. If you do plan on including your favorite store into your session I recommend you call ahead of time to make sure they’re ok with you doing this. They’re much more likely to say yes when someone that loves their store as much as you do asks rather than a photographer who has no connection to them!

4. Visit a Local Art Museum

For any couple looking for an artful, vibrant setting for their engagement photos, I can’t recommend heading to your local art museum enough! This is especially the case if you two love checking out the latest art exhibits and installments. Even if you’re just into the idea of a more artistic approach to your engagement photos, this is still a wonderful option. Many art museums like the Denver Art Museum don’t require a photo permit and only ask that you request a date in advance for photography, but this is something that varies from location to location.

5. Head to Your Library or Favorite Bookstore

This one’s for the bookworms! If you’re both avid readers, having your engagement photos taken at your favorite bookstore or local library is a great idea to spice up your session with your personalities. These are both super fun settings with tons of prop potential, and you’ll likely find a good book or two that you can take home to enjoy that night!

6. Share a Drink Together in the Mountains

This idea is for any couple looking to add some of their own unique personalities into their adventurous engagement session. Colorado is home to SO many incredible mountains and hiking trails that are wonderful for engagement photos. To make the hike feel more personal to you, pack along your favorite drink to share while you’re in the mountains. Whether you want to have a beer together, take a shot of tequila, or pop some champagne, this is such a fun idea to make your engagement photos feel more unique to you!

7. Go on a Picnic

An easy option for couples looking to enjoy nature’s beauty during their engagement session while also including a bit of their personality is to have a picnic together. Whether it’s up in the mountains, or at your local park, picnics are the perfect mixture of fun and romance for your photos. Pack along your favorite snacks and beverages for a bit of a personal touch, and enjoy this time together while having your engagement photos taken!

8. Cruise Around the Neighborhood on Your Bikes

Last but not least, take a bike ride around your favorite neighborhood! It can be around the neighborhood you live in, one you frequently explore, or somewhere close to another location you plan on incorporating into your photos. This is one of my favorite ideas that couples incorporate into their engagement photos. The lightheartedness of these photos is infectious, and a perfect way to start off your engagement session.

And SO Many More!

There are of course a TON of other ways to make your engagement photos unique to you, like including your pup, or one of the many other examples in the photos throughout this blog! The important thing to remember is to do something you both love so that your photos really feel like you.
