Though I do love my weddings and sessions, I have to say, these Colorado documentary family sessions truly have my heart. Not only are they a ton of fun, but they also include some of the most intimate moments I’ve documented. This documentary family session in Colorado was one of my favorite family sessions I’ve had the chance to photograph. Kathryn, Chris, Cruz, and Eila were so much fun to work with. Before we get into their session though, what is documentary photography?
What is Documentary Photography?
Family documentary photography is where you invite a photographer into your space. They take photos of your family interacting and spending time together where you’re most comfortable. As much as I love taking photos in a park or the gorgeous mountains of Colorado, there is something truly special about documenting images in your own space.
Having a documentary session in your home, the place you sleep, eat, cry, laugh, and live the most with your whole family brings on a new meaning to your photos. The photos become more intimate and vulnerable. They allow your family to show up as themselves in the place they are most familiar with.
How do Documentary Family Sessions Work?
Taking your kids to have their photos taken can be quite an experience. In many cases, you bring them to a place they haven’t been before. They are expected to smile and play in their new clothes, at this new location, all in front of a stranger with a camera they’ve never met before. Taking photos in your home allows kids to show up as themselves in the place they are most familiar with in an unfamiliar situation such as being photographed.
For each documentary family session, I show up at your home or a place that feels like home and guide you and your kids through experiences that you’d normally do day to day in that space. The coolest part about documentary family sessions is that each session looks completely different from the next one. Every family is different, and documentary photography captures all the little unique things that make your family special and you.
Colorado Documentary Family Session
It was an absolute joy to show up and document Kathryn, Chris, Cruz, and Eila. For each documentary session, I take some time prior to the session to get to know the family and what they love about living their life in Colorado. I talked with Kathryn a few days before our session. Together we came up with some ideas that would be both fun and special to them.
For their Colorado documentary session, we spent our time in and around their home. A lot of book reading, playing in the cul-de-sac and backyard, eating popsicles, drinking lemonade, and ending our session with a quick dip in the pool!
Capturing these moments of your family together in your day-to-day lives is what makes documentary photography so unique. If you’re looking to book a documentary family session of your own head over to my contact page. You can also check out my family photography Instagram to see more of my work.
